Mimesis has been the ultimate goal in the Western art and architecture throughout the history. Nature was considered as a model that contains the method to arrive to perfection. The meaning of mimesis in architecture, however, has been different from other arts, since the notion of 'nature' was not given or direct in architecture. The classic architecture, that has been supposed to express nature successfully, was a substitute, under the notion of 'secondary nature'. The advent of computer technology and digital architecture enables modern architects to express or represent nature with more direct method. Since digital architecture is based on a computer that works with an operation of machine and it is able to extract the principle of nature and re-generate in the exactly same way as in nature, utilize these in form-finding in architecture. The study is to examine the process of form-making in digital architecture and to find its basic meanings. Digital architecture is developed as a parallel of the development in history of the interaction of art and technology. By the means of digital architecture various meanings and parametric are transferred directly into architecture more than any other traditional ways. Its mechanical process of computation is an only physical base to create an emergent form And self-organizing methods are added to create rich forms, which is not possible to achieve in a traditional method. The study finds various methods that represent nature and categorizes into characteristic groups. |
