This study intends to investigate the expression characteristics of movement in the film ¡®Metropolis,¡¯ which newly transformed the visual and spatial experiences experimenting architectural expressivity to high perfection in a very original vision with the medium of film. The meaning of movement in ¡®Metropolis¡¯ is a spatial component that determines the characteristic and mood of space, serving as an element that indicates the meanings of various spatio-temporal situations so implicatively. Meanwhile, such contextual conditions as the form and characteristic of space in which movement occurs become an indispensable support to determine the modality of expressing the form and meaning of movement, and also the characters serving as subjects in the space can be seen as working agents who have dominant influence on the modality of expressing movement. Ultimately, the architectural significance of the film ¡®Metropolis¡¯ can be found in its incorporating the element of movement into light and space with original interpretation and vision, experimenting the relationship between movement, light, and space with this formula: ¡®light makes movement and both determines the characteristic and mood of space, which in turn generates movement, which then unveils the raison d'etre of light. |
