There is a lot of effort among many construction companies to adopt BIM as an implementation tool for "nD" and developing prototypes for its systematization. However stage-wise integration of the information should be distinguished from its further growth. One might think that making "nD" is possible just by implementing 3D but this idea can cause negative impact on the development of BIM, which is really happening in the real business area today. For example, the quantity of concrete can be directly derived from 3D model. This quantity (= information) needs further classification (= growth) according to building stories at 4D stage and material properties such as strength at 5D stage, respectively. From a purely technical point of view, concrete quantity based on its material properties can be estimated at 3D stage. The problem is that information about the material properties of concrete is not necessary at 3D stage but is to be developed at 5D stage. After that, the information can be input back into the 3D model as valuable properties. The authors believe that the boundary of stage-wise information can be released by establishing the so-called "Information Classification System" and the starting point lies in the comparative analysis between 3D and 5D information. This study first reviews existing quantity estimation systems, analysed the information in BIM at member level, and finally suggests measures for establishing an estimation system using structure quantity information in BIM. |
