¿ä¾à2 The purpose of this research is to study on the change of consciousness in Korean architectural circles through the demolition matter of the Chosun Government General Building. The function of the building has changed several times throughout the Korean modern history owing to its context related to history, location, and architectural & constructional style. In particular, the demolition of this building became a turning point for Korean architectural circles to raise their consciousness. That is to say, this event made them rethink about an interpretation of historical buildings and also about placeness of them in the historical urban context. In addition, they pursued independence of architecture from external factors like the political power, and tried to reach to a contact point between architecture and the public. However, the change of their consciousness still left limitations to be considered, such as that they were not able to subjectively interpret Korean modernity and that no practical movements followed up to complete the demolition debates. Despite these limitations, this paper argues that the debates concerning the building's demolition were meaningful in itself, particularly because they illustrated social meanings of architecture and raised Korean architectural circles' consciousness in history.
