Korean society has been facing a new phase of aging society since the massive baby boom generation has receded from the front line of society. This generation presently accounts for 14.6% of the total population in 2010. This generation is vastly different from their parent’s generation in that they are highly educated and relatively healthy and wealthy, thus they would have a specific housing preferences for their elderly housing in the future. Besides the demographic cycle of USA preceded Korea by approximately 10 years, it has already taken a research on lifespan and housing environment of baby boomer ahead of Korea. More, as the general social phenomenon of USA is similar to that of Korea, it is speculated that Korea will trace the course of the social trend of USA. Thus, the purpose of this study rests in finding out the preference on elderly housing of the baby boom generation according to location, characteristics of housing and community. This study reviewed 6 reference literatures from both domestic and American association reports which are world-famous covering retirement housing projects and elderly housing planning. As a result of analysis about trends of housing moves and preference, American preferred to stay mostly in their current area, however a small percentage showed a preference to move to a planned community specifically for elderly. Other preferences are shown such as single story houses, security factors, and amenities and access factors, especially to hospitals, in connection with community. This study is evidently clarifying preferences of house type and community of baby boom generation, which is the focused potential aged group in future aging society but has almost never been surveyed, so the findings of this study are expected to be used as the groundwork to build diversity plans for future elderly housing. |
