The seismic coefficient method(SCM) is an equivalent static analysis and a popular technique for earthquake response analysis of massive structures. This study deals with some issues which can be arisen in practice including range of horizontal modeling and how to determine input acceleration profile. Earthquake analyses have been carried out for a couple of typical underground box structures, and their responses were compared with those by an accurate dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis. The comparison demonstrated advantages of the SCM such as simplicity in modeling and accuracy in response calculation. We could also indicate that the range of horizontal modeling of ground region shall be larger than the height of structure. Finally, based on the numerical results, we recommend that earthquake force by the SCM is multiplied by a factor of 1.20 for design purpose. |
