This study presents a finite element analysis method that can address the effects of the far field motion and the soil-structure interaction. A two-dimensional finite element model that consists of a structure and shallow soft subsoil was used. The finite element model was used for nonlinear time domain analysis of OpenSees program. Parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of the foundation size and structure mass. The results of numerical study showed that the magnitude of the structural response decreased as the foundation size and the structural mass increased, particularly for strong earthquake. In particular, the response spectrum affected by the soil-structure interaction was significantly different from the response spectrum based on the free-field motion. |
