The purpose of this study is to review recent Korean hospital design and to suggest reference materials for future hospital planning and design. Major contents consisted of the reviewing of healthcare system & the present status of hospital architecture, the understanding of architectural characteristics in hospital design for recent 10 years, and the suggestion of tasks for better hospital design in Korea. The results of this study could be summarized as follows; Comparing with OECD countries, acute care beds in Korea are somewhat sufficient, but long-term care beds are totally insufficient and so need to be largely expanded within a short time. Korean hospital design has been generally advanced. Though overall forms of most hospital buildings have still vertical concept with supplementary factors, some horizontal concept hospitals also have been attempted. Hospital buildings have been growing in size and scale to meet the high level of patients' medical/healing demands. In ward plan, various shapes of floor plan have appeared, numbers & types of bedrooms in nursing unit are still far from satisfaction. Some tasks for better hospital in Korea are suggested as increase of private & semi-private bedroom, decreasing the number of bed per nursing unit, and more attempts of horizontal concept hospital. |
