¿ä¾à2 This study examined the needs of and behaviors in entrance space by dwelling size in apartments in order to suggest the design criteria for planning the user-oriented entrance space on the basis of the usage characteristics of the entrance space and the residents' needs. For this study, a questionnaire survey of 263 housewives of 6 apartment complexes, selected considering the development status and the characteristic of the entrance space, was carried out. The results of this study are as follows; (1)The entrance space is used mainly for space in which to put outside objects and to communicate with their neighborhoods and visitors. These uses show a difference according to the dwelling size. The A-size (85 to 102 §³) apartment is used for the storage of objects used outside, and The C-size (135 to 160 §³) apartment is used for the expression of individuality. (2)The outside door facing an elevator hall is normally locked. Otherwise, the inside door facing the house is opened for ventilation or day lighting, and the pattern of door locking is affected by the seasonal use or the time of the day. (3)On the residents' awareness for the entrance space, over half of the residents had an incorrect understanding of the entrance space that is offered as a common area, as a service area or as a unit private area. They regarded the outside door facing an elevator hall as a DAEMUN (the same as the front door in a general apartment) that links the inside to the outside of the apartment, and the inside door facing the house as a JUNGMUN, dividing the entrance from the living room. (4)According to the study of the residents' needs, the bigger the dwelling size was, the more important the residents thought the function of expression of individuality, compared with the function of storage or ventilation.
