In our contemporary cities where the population is concentrated, the zones in transition between downtowns and suburbs have increased, while the obsolete multi-use buildings having some historical meanings for the cities have been demolished to be replaced with the new single-use buildings. In a nutshell, our urban spaces fall short of some positive images. Thus, urban dwellers have come to request for safe, comfortable and diverse urban environments, which forms the background for the multi-use development plans reflecting such requests. The purpose of this study was to review the multi-use developments of urban design based on the mutual relationship among urban spaces, and thereupon, determine their factors and examine the characteristics of urban design by category of multi-use development plans and thereby, analyze the nature of the urban spaces in indiscrete, composite and general ways. The introduction part of this study describes background, purpose, scope and methods of the study and suggests the significance of this study in reference to similar preceding studies. The main body of this study defines concepts of the urban space design and characteristics of the urban design and thereupon, emphasize the need to analyze the urban spaces and set a framework of analysis to examine the characteristics of the urban design, and thereby, analyze the sample multi-use development cases. The multi-use developments were analyzed in view of core design elements, linkage with surroundings, connection among elements and intra-zone circulation system. Based on the results of such an analysis, the characteristics of the urban design for the multi-use developments are determined and thereupon, suggestions for the multi-use developments are put forwards depending on such characteristics. This study analyzed the correlations between structure of urban space and its elements through diagrams and thereby, confirmed that a relationship of order was set for each urban space system and thus, suggested a guideline for multi-use designs for future downtown redevelopment projects. |
