Pedestrian space is basic and important as walking and driving spaces in our living conditions. Nowadays, the pedestrian space is conducting various functions as a promenade space and considering as one of outdoor community spaces. With higher desire to pleasant surroundings, the residents have high expectation of outdoor community spaces in apartment complexes. Also, the elderly and disabled people are considered as important issues these days. So, the pedestrian space of apartment complexes must consider all age groups and physical appeals. However, the pedestrian space in present apartment complexes are planned uniformly without consideration of the resident's needs. In this situation, executing universal design should be able to increase satisfaction and provide a unique and comfortable environment for all residents. The purpose of this study intends to evaluate the present situation of application of universal design on the pedestrian space in apartment complexes. The research was done examining 15 different apartment complexes which were built after 2005 in Seoul. The application of universal design principles on the pedestrian space are evaluated and measured by actual survey. As a result, this study finds that the use of the application of universal design on the pedestrian space of these apartment complexes is relatively low. Also, the pedestrian space only meets the minimum legal regulations and codes for the complexes, and does not consider all demographic groups such as the disabled. In conclusion, universal design regulations and design guidelines need to be updated to provide a change in new environments to satisfy all users. Applying universal design will improve usage of the pedestrian spaces' and better designs can increase the quality of resident's lives. |
