South Korea has recently experienced rapid decreases of both mortality and fertility, which have brought about the rapid process of population aging. Meanwhile, the development of industrialization and urbanization has initiated the change of family structure and function. In this point of view, the urban type ‘silver town’ market is likely to have rising demand within the urban elderly residents, as it is expected to cover the broad concept of ‘aging in place’. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the direction where Korea’s urban silver town is heading at the initial stage of development. This study is to identify the actual conditions of currently built urban type retirement communities in cities whose target is on upper middle class elderly. Architectural and interior features of the residential units were collected through field study. General information and service provided was also acquired by interview with staffs and the advertisement. The photos taken at the site were used for the analysis of the featuring architectural and interior details. Five universal design principals were introduced as the framework of analysis. As the results of analyzing, this study could obtain the actual conditions of how the universal design principals and what the detailed design ideas were applied to each facility. The current architectural and interior details on the silver town in Seoul were identified. This study has a significant meaning on suggesting the basis on planning and development of the ideal urban silver town by guiding the future direction through the current evaluation. |
