Flat-plate buildings designed by gravity load only without lateral load resisting systems were selected for seismic performance evaluation. Since they have been widely constructed in the country and have to solely resist when earthquakes occur, it is anticipated that they will be very weak to earthquake loadings and needed to be reinforced. For evaluating whether reinforcing is necessary, low and mid height flat-plate buildings were designed, and capacity spectrum method and FEMA methodology were conducted. The results showed that they do not need reinforcing if following capacity spectrum method, but if following FEMA methodology, they may not satisfy the collapse prevention performance level so they need seismic reinforcing. |
