Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has installed an ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) to detect big earthquakes occurred in the East Sea and to extend earthquake-observation range. The OBS can play an important role to quickly detect the earthquake occurred at the sea and to increase accuracy of seismic analysis. The OBS is located at 15 km south of the Ulleung Island and 2,000 m below sea level. This system consists of a velocity seismometer and a pressure gauge and transfers the obtained data to data-acquisition instrument of the Ulleung meteorological office through fiber-optic cable. The sensor to observe seismic waves is three components "Input/Output_sensor SM 6" with the 4.5 Hz corner frequency and 28.8 V/m/s sensitivity and has a function to keep horizontal balance at ocean bottom. The data obtained from the OBS are converted into the Mini-SEED format by the data processing system at the land station and then sent to Earthquake Analysis System of KMA. These data are saved with sampling rate of 20 and 100 Hz. The installed system at the Ulleung island is the first OBS in Korea for monitoring the earthquakes at sea and extends the observation range of KMA to sea. The data collected from the seismometer can be used to study oceanic faults and structure. |
