This research is critically to investigate Rem Koolhaas's library design works, in the aspect of spatial configuration for the public. In the National Library of France project, he proposed separated several volumes of void for each functions with 'drive-thru' circulation systems. On the contrary Jussieu Library project presented the labyrinthine quality and was characterized undivided smooth space, flows, and 'operationality'. Seattle Public Library combines these two concepts of spatial configuration by giving freedom each elements -platforms- and defining orders. Especially, he introduced the concept of 'living room' for the public space in the library, and divided information service section into separated part -mixing chamber- from the public space. He set up the new concepts of the public space in library by reorganizing the program, and the social role of the public facilities. |
