The aim of this thesis is to study on the Tate Modern as one of the prominent transformation case to adapt an existing industrial building. The building has been converted by Swiss architect Herzog & de Meuron, whose design have highlighted the building's new function while respecting the integrity of original building, Bankside Power Station designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. By re-using the imposing power station, architects bypass the needs to create the memorable form that is deemed essential in other modern art gallery. They simply borrow it from the old building, with adaptations. Tate Modern seems well prepared to act the role of the modern art gallery, which is to be a organic space of many different types of exhibition, and the turbine hall has the potential to be a great public space made by the variety activity. |
