This study focused on the works of Charles Correa(1930- ) who has been well known in combining the tradition and the modern concept of architecture to come up with new vocabularies in the history of architecture and manipulating the surrounding environmental conditions. As a leading architect promoting the concept of "Architectural Regionalism" in India, his contribution to fully expose the Identity of Indian Architecture has been remarkable. Among many of Correa's works, the museum projects best represent his interpretation of the Regionalism. His successful explanation of the Regionalism through the development of spatial organization and design elements will be helpful tip to our recent movement of museum construction through out the whole country without any pre-planning or respecting to the surrounding condition or to the local identity. Correa's constant consideration on the use of local materials, cultural background, even the weather condition always effected his architectural design which is the reason that his architecture blends well with surrounding nature when it is completed. He often uses the phrase "open-to-sky space concept" in order to show his concern about the modern ideas dominating traditional India without any proper understanding of the basic values of the country. This study will reveal his unique architectural concepts through his museum designs as well as looking at some clever ways of adapting the traditional forms of India - such as using Mandala or village forms- in order to create modernized architectural monuments representing new India. |
