옥천 이지당(二止堂)은 조선시대 대표적인 성리학자이자 의병장인 중봉 조헌(重峯 趙憲, 1544∼1592)의 유상처(遊賞處)에 설립된 서당(書堂)이다. 본 연구는 중봉 조헌이 옥천으로 낙향하여 각신마을에 이르러 유상을 하게 된 배경과 함께 각신서당의 실체를 추적해 보고, 이지당 설립 당시의 인문환경과 함께 서당의 설립목적과 배경에 대해 『이지당기(二止堂記)』를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 또한 ‘정사건축로서의 입지특성’, ‘강학공간 평면구성의 변통’ ‘서원 문루의 차용’이라는 관점에서 건축특성에 대해 고찰하였다.
이지당은 기호학파의 대표적인 학자인 송시열의 지원 아래 김만균과 지역유림이 힘을 합하여 1647년 설립하였다. 그 설립 목적은 조헌에 대한 숭앙과 지역인재를 양성하기 위한 것이었다. 원래 강학공간인 본체와 휴식공간인 루(현 동루)로 이루어졌던 이지당은 몇 차례의 변화를 거쳐 현재에 이른다. 18세기 초 서루가 건립되었고, 1903년에 중수, 1982년에는 대대적인 보수와 함께 복원이 이루어졌다.
이지당의 입지는 조선시대 성리학자들이 경영한 구곡원림(九曲園林)과 정사건축의 입지특성이 확인된다. 이는 당시 전범으로 여겨졌던 주자의 무이정사(武夷精舍)와 무이구곡(武夷九曲)의 입지특성과 맥을 같이하고 있다.
이지당의 강학공간은 주자의 무이정사 인지당과 삼간지제의 형식을 변통하여 방(2칸)-대청(3칸)-방(2칸) 구성으로 한 홑집이었다. 또한 학문수양과 휴식이라는 기능을 수용하여 동루를 설치하였다.
18세기초 첨건된 서루는 서원에서 17세기부터 중요성이 인식된 유식공간으로서의 문루를 차용한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 서루의 건립시기, 진입부에 설치된 점과 진입로를 바라보는 좌향, 정면과 배면의 의장인 익공형식의 공포, 개방되어 있는 1층 등은 조선시대 서원의 문루에서 보이는 특징을 고스란히 담고 있다. 이와 같이 옥천 이지당은 조헌이라는 역사적 인물이 갖는 인문적 배경 아래 정사의 입지, 강학공간의 변통, 서원 문루의 차용이라는 다양한 건축형식이 내재된 건축이라 할 수 있다. |

Ijidang(二止堂) is a private village school (seodang, 書堂) established in Okcheon, north Chungcheong province where Jungbong Jo, Heon(重峯 趙憲, 1544-1592 AD) had trained for his sound mind and body(yusangcheo, 遊賞處). Jo, Heon was a notable Neo-Confucian scholar of the Kiho School and also a righteous general leading soldiers in Joseon Dynasty. According to Ijidanggi(二止堂記), Ijidang was constructed to honor Jo, Heon and to train local talents in 1647 with the support of Song, Si-yeol(宋時烈, 1607-1689 AD),a representative scholar belong to Kiho School and other local Confucian scholars. Ijidang currently consists of Main Body(本體) in the middle along with the East(Dong-lu 東樓) and the West Pavilions(Seo-lu 西樓) attached to each side. The Main Body and the Dong-lu firstly constructed were to give lectures and to rest within. Ijidang has undergone several changes in its form so far. The surrounding nearby Ijidang shows characteristics of the Confucian architecture for training(Jeong-sa, 精舍) and the building itself was to be built in a scenic place apart from the secular world in which scholars stayed, cultivated their body and mind or taught disciples within. The lecture space of Ijidang is positioned next to the main hall(Dae-cheong 大廳) unlike other typical forms of a three-bay building(samganjije 三間之制) at that period. West lu, a two-story building added afterwards in the early 18th century representing characteristics of the Gate Pavilion(Mullu, 門樓) of Neo-Confucian Academies(Seo-won, 書院) in Joseon Dynasty was typically located where the entrance and the ground floor of the main building are visible simultaneously. |
