Trams have evolved and developed into representative public transit throughout the world, repeating dismantlement and restitution in the midst of the process of technical development and the transformation of cities following the Industrial Revolution. trams continued to lose their popularity after World War II, but were newly introduced into 66 cities as they went through oil shocks in the 1970s and their eco-friendly characteristic stood out in the 1990s. Recently, Korea is also pushing for reintroduction of trams. What is recognized in this situation is that trams which were born 200 years ago are still in the spotlight in modern cities, which raises a question about the reasons. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to resolve this question. To this end, we conduct a complete enumeration survey of trams in cities around the world which are currently in use, and then analyze the characteristics of changes through an in-depth analysis of 9 cases and consider the reasons for their continued use. The consideration was made from the viewpoint of consistency with the urban system, technology development for service enhancement, and sustainability of operation management, and as a result, it was found that the imagery value, economic value, and eco-friendly value of trams were the determinants of their continuing use. |
