이 연구는 부산 매축지 벽화마을을 사례로 하여, 벽화조성이 범죄예방에 어떤 효과를 가지는 지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 유사실험설계를 이용하여 매축지 벽화마을과 주변 벽화가 조성되지 않은 매축지 마을을 비교한다. 이 연구에 사용된 자료는 매축지 마을에 벽화가 조성된 2011년을 전후한 이 마을의 총 범죄건수로, 경찰의 지리정보시스템을 이용하여 입수하였다. 이 자료에 대한 분석결과, 벽화가 조성되지 않은 지역에 비해, 벽화가 조성된 지역에서 범죄의 감소가 최소 52%에서 최대 85%까지 유의미하게 감소하였음. 이 결과는 지역의 무질서를 감소시킴으로 써 지역주민의 범죄의 두려움을 낮추고, 이것은 다시 지역주민의 지역에 대한 애착과 외부활동의 증가를 유도하여, 지역의 범죄를 감소시킬 수 있다는 윌슨과 켈링의 깨진 창 이론의 설명을 지지한다. 결국 이것은 벽화의 조성으로 인하여 깨끗해진 환경이 주민의 외부활동을 늘리고, 이렇게 늘어난 외부활동으로 인해 주민들 사이의 상호작용이 증가하며, 지역사회에서의 유대와 애착이 증가함으로써 동네가 ‘우리의 공간’이라는 공간에 대한 애착이 범죄를 줄일 수 있었다는 것을 의미한다. |

This study analyzes the crime-prevention effect of mural arts, through a case of ‘Maechookji’ mural village in Busan. For this, the number of crimes at mural-art area(experimental group) are compared with the number of crimes at two non-mural-art areas(control group A, B) in ‘Maechookji’ village, using a quasi-experimental design. The data includes a total number of crimes, happened in three areas(one experimental group, two control groups) before and after 2011, which are acquired from police GIS information system. The data analysis shows the statistically significant result that the number of crimes at mural-art area has reduced by 52%~85%, in comparison with control areas. The result supports Wilson and Kelling’s Broken Windows theory, which explains that the decline of disorder(such as a mural art) reduces the fear of crime, then increases attachment to neighborhood and activities of outside, and finally can reduce crime. |
