This study examines locational characteristics of theaters in Gyeongseong as spaces where modern ways of living could be learned, and analyses their function as socialization spaces. To this end, the theaters of Namchon and Bukchon, as well as public halls were analyzed as spaces for the formation of modern high-class culture. From a locational perspective, theaters at that time were utilized as cultural spaces to assimilate the spaces of Namchon and to weaken the boundaries of the dual city. Additionally, by virtue of their location, they served as catalyst to strengthen the spatial control structure of the Japanese regime. Furthermore, they performed several social functions for symbolizing modernism and pursuing publicness. From the Japanese perspective, they symbolized discipline and governmental control; from the perspective of the Joseon people, they were places for enlightenment and creating a new social class. This research is significant because it empirically analyzes the transition process to a modern society through theater plans introduced by both, private and public sectors. |
