서대문 형무소는 일제강점기 유산으로 역사문화환경에 대한 다양한 시각이 중첩되고 경합하는 장소이다. 본 연구에서는 역사적 함의가 있는 장소에 대하여 시대와 사회의 변화에 따라 문화자산으로서 그 의미가 어떻게 감춰지고 부각되어 왔는지 살펴보고, 문화자산에 대한 논의를 주변으로 확장하여 역사문화경관을 이해하고자 하였다. 서대문 독립공원 변천과정을 통해 본 문화자산의 가치는 끊임없이 상호작용하며 재해석된 결과물로 시대상을 반영하고 있다. 또한 과거 장애물로 인식되었던 공간이 주변과의 관계 개선을 통해 문화자산의 건축적 가치를 넘어 지역적, 사회적 가치까지 개념이 확대되어 나타나고 있었다. 한편, 이 과정에서 문화자산의 주변 지역까지 체계적으로 관리할 수 있는 종합적인 계획이 부족하다는 점과 거주민에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 역사문화경관에 대한 관리가 필요하다는 점도 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 서대문 독립공원의 변천과정을 역사문화자산에 대한 국제 원칙과 함께 분석하였다는데 의의가 있다. 문화자산에 대한 가치 인식의 변화 과정을 바탕으로 전문가들이 비판적인 시각을 가지고 보존 정책을 수행한다면, 앞으로 우리 문화자산의 진정성을 살릴 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다. |

The Seodaemun Prison is a place where various aspects of the history and culture environment overlap and compete. In this study, we attempted to examine how the meanings of cultural assets, in terms of places with historical implications, are hidden and magnified according to changes in age and society. The value of culture examined through the transition process of Seodaemun Independence Park is the result of constant interaction and reinterpretation according to the situation of a given period, thereby reflecting societal values. In addition, the space, which was perceived as an obstacle on the past, has proven to have not only architectural significance but also regional and social value through the improvement of relationships with surrounding areas. This study analyzed the transition process of Seodaemun Independence Park along with international principles on historical and cultural heritages. If experts take a critical perception and implement the preservation policy, it will provide a great opportunity to strengthen interest in the authenticity of our cultural assets in the future. |
