¿ä¾à2 The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of social capital in the process of revitalizing traditional market through tourism with the case study of Tongin market. In general, social capital has been recognized as an important factor for endogenous regional development by virtue of the mutual trust and established norms among actors in networks and the ability to mobilize external resources. In the field of tourism and regional economic policy, there are empirical studies that emphasize the virtuous cycle that social capital leads to the regional development and vice versa. However, what has happened in Tongin market tells us different story. During the revitalization of the Tongin market, the bonding social capital has decreased, and the bridging social capital has also been weakened. To cope with this problem, merchants have been trying to recover social capital through various strategies. This study shows that it is important to understand the roles and changes of social capital in the context of internal actors in the establishment and evaluation of revitalization strategies.
