Tamra Sipgyeongdo and Tamra Sunryeokdo contain a series of old paintings which exhibit topographies nearby towns and forts as well as noted geomorphological landscapes. They could be consequently considered a collection of representative landforms in Jeju Island. Geomorphological landscapes in the paintings are classified into volcanic, fluvial, coastal and weathering landform. A volcanic edifice appears most frequently in the paintings, reflecting the particular emotion of Jeju people on Mount Halla and oreums as a prototype landscape of Jeju Island. A lava tube was underestimated due to its negative images. Nevertheless, it was regarded as a frightening and intriguing landform in that a cave was firstly expressed as a major landscape in Tamra Sunryeokdo. While a pool was not highly evaluated except Yongyeon, all of three famous waterfalls in Seogwipo area were depicted in the paintings, suggesting there were scant freshwater zones in the island. A sea cliff was not also properly appraised due to its difficult access and limited views. Since the viewpoints of outsiders as well as natives were simultaneously projected on geomorphological landscapes in the paintings, Tamra Sipgyeongdo and Tamra Sunryeokdo are precious historical documents for examining the ancestor¡¯s geomorphological perception on landforms in Jeju Island. |
