본 연구는 도시설계 담론으로써 뉴어바니즘과 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 차별화된 특징과 서로에게 제기된 비판적 견해를 검토하여 상충성과 상호보완성을 분석하고자 한다. 뉴어바니즘과 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 차별성은 도시설계의 개념, 이론적 원칙, 실천적 접근방식에서 나타난다. 개념적 부분에서 뉴어바니즘의 고전적 도시로 회귀를 통한 사회성 회복과 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 도시와 자연의 통합적 방향은 대립된 입장을 보여준다. 반면 이론적 부분에서 상충되는 부분은 적게 나타났으며 오히려 서로의 약점을 보완할 수 있는 가능성을 찾을 수 있었다. 실천적 부분에서는 도시의 구조적 형태에 대해 상충성이 나타나지만 광역적 연결의 요소는 서로 수용가능한 전략으로 판단되었다. 두 담론의 상충성은 도시의 규모와 성격에 따라 뉴어바니즘과 랜드스케이프 어바니즘 중 더 적합한 방식을 선택하는 문제로 해석될 수 있다. 따라서 뉴어바니즘과 랜드스케이프 어바니즘이 서로의 비판적 견해를 수용하여 약점을 보완한다면 오늘날 당면한 문제에 대한 더 발전된 도시설계의 대안을 제시할 수 있으리라 예상된다. |

This paper examines different characteristics of New Urbanism(NU) and Landscape Urbanism(LU) and analyzes criticisms on both movements in order to find out conflicting and complementary elements. Differences between NU and LU can be classified in three categories: philosophy and attitudes on urban design, theoretic principles, and practical approaches. A large portion of criticism are leveled from both sides on the concepts on urban design and apparent contradiction is found. However, contradiction in the theoretical part is not significant. There are rather high potentials to make up for the weakness of both movements by eclectically adopting other’s theoretic principles. Conflicting elements is found in urban design practice of NU and LU, especially in the debate on a desirable structural form for the contemporary city. However, the strategy of regional connection can be adapted to the urban design practice of others without a significant conflict. Depending on the size and characteristic of cities, either NU and LU can suggest better solution; therefore it is not a matter of the value-judgement. If NU and LU correct their weakness by embracing criticisms, both movements can suggest more improved urban design strategies to face with complicated problems of contemporary cities. |
