포스트 포디즘 시대를 맞아 주요 대도시를 중심으로 도심 재개발?재생 사업이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이러한 현상은 20세기 초 다니엘 번햄으로 대표되는 근대 도시미화운동과 많은 유사점을 갖는다. 도시미화운동은 환경의 물리적 개선과 사회의 도덕적 개선이라는 시대적 요구에 힘입어 생겨났으며, 전 세계 도시 설계를 태동시킨 모태로 여겨진다. 또한 이 운동은 옴스테드 등의 조경가를 통해 근대의 공원 이데올로기 형성에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이에 본 연구는 미국 도시미화운동이 갖는 조경사적 의의를 살펴보고, 이 운동이 현대 도시 재생 사업에 갖는 함의를 동대문디자인플라자 & 파크 조성사업을 중심으로 탐색해 보고자 한다. 도시미화운동의 조경사적 의의로, 첫째, 상호 연결된 공원과 대로 체계의 조성 및 조경가의 전문적 컨설팅 시스템 구축, 둘째, 공원의 이데올로기 성립, 셋째, 주택 문제 등 도시의 사회적 측면과 조경의 대립, 넷째, 기념비적 권위의 수단으로의 활용을 들 수 있다.이를 바탕으로 동대문디자인플라자 & 파크 조성사업을 살펴보면, 시각경관 중심적 접근, 기존의 도시조직을 파괴하는 개발방식, 일방적 개발방식 등의 시사점을 도출할 수 있다. |

In this Post-Fordism period, a growing number of cities are actively carrying out the urban redevelopment or regeneration projects. This phenomenon recalls the past urban movement, the City Beautiful Movement in early 20th century. The City Beautiful Movement took place by the social needs which required physical improvement of environment and ethical reform of the society. The movement is recognized as the outset of urban design and has significant effects on urban park ideology. This paper aims to find out the meanings of City Beautiful Movement on landscape architectural history and to search for the implications on contemporary urban regeneration with the case of the Dongdaemun Design plaza & Park project in Seoul. The historical meanings of this movement are 1) construction of interconnected park and boulevard system and of professional consulting system by landscape architect, 2) creation of modern park ideology, 3) opposition between landscape architecture and social movements, and 4) instrumental role for monumental authority. Considering the case project, it is similar to the movement in terms of 1) visual landscape-oriented approach, 2) development destroying existing urban structure, 3) top-down development. |
