¿ä¾à2 This study was carried out to investigate the wood properties for efficient utilization of warm temperate tree species. The tested species were Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii Nakai grown in Korea. Fundamental wood properties such as anatomical, physical and mechanical properties and chemical components were examined. Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii is ring-porous, straight grained and coarse textured wood. The heartwood of this species was clearly distinguished from the sapwood. Physical properties of this wood species has a moderate basic specific gravity of 0.61¡¾0.02, and shrinkage of 4.51¡¾0.36% in radial direction and 7.91¡¾0.45% in tangential direction. Mechanical properties determined were intermediate with the MOR of 907¡¾103kgf/§², compression strength parallel to grain of 472¡¾36kgf/§², and tension strength parallel to grain of 1,033¡¾175kgf/§². Also, this wood species had high extractive contents: 8.3% for cold water and 11.6% for hot water
