A study is made to express the characteristics of the city of Yeosu by visualizing the area in terms of the opportunity of holding the International Exposition Yeosu Korea 2012. Then, in an attempt to find the right direction for city development, it examined the process of Japan's compulsory occupation, which was the turning point of the city. By examining the main axis of Jeolla Joasuyeong, which was a military installation in the Josun Dynasty (in which the periods of compulsory occupation are classified as the early, the middle and the last), the study intended to recognize the physical variations and characteristics of the city. In order to excavate historical materials, historical artifacts and various types of data were collected and the physical variations of Yeosu were then analyzed. It was found that Yeosu had developed differently in each period due to the influence of the migration policy for people in the fishing industry (from 1905), the opening of railway traffic (in 1930) and the Japanese army station (since 1941). The result of this study is expected to be useful for presenting information about the attempts being made to change Yeosu, for determining the direction of development as a future city, and as basic data for city management. |
