본 연구는 수로(水路)에 적극적으로 대응하면서 독특한 도시공간을 형성해 온 중국 소주(蘇州)와 이탈리아 베네치아의 공간조직을 비교.분석한 것이다. 본 연구는 문헌연구와 현지관찰조사를 병행하였다. 소주는 대운하 건설 이후 계획도시가 지니는 질서잡힌 공간조직을 형성해 온 반면, 베네치아는 자생적인 수로체계와 인공수로가 공존하는 유기적인 공간조직을 형성해 왔다. 그리고 두 도시는 공통적으로, 수로를 운송수단으로 이용하면서 일상생활, 상업행위 그리고 커뮤니티활동의 중요한 요소로 활용해 왔다. 하지만 두 도시는 물과관계하는 방식에 있어서 공통된 측면과 더불어 각자의 독자성 또한 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 유사점과 차이점을 비교.분석하여 동·서양을 각각 대표하는 두 수향도시의 공간구성적 특성을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 두도시의 공간구조를 구체적으로 규명하기 위한 비교항목은 다음과 같이 설정하였다: ①수로와 도로체계 ②주거지의 필지체계 ③주택 및 상점과 수로와의 관계 ④커뮤니티공간의 형성 ⑤주택의 집합방식 ⑥주택으로의 진입방식 및 내부동선 ⑦주택내부의 공간구성 ⑧주택의 부가공간. 수향도시의 공간조직에있어서 수로, 도로체계와 필지는 서로 긴밀히 관계하므로 이러한 측면에 특히 주안점을 두어서 비교.분석하였다. 분석결과, 두도시는 주거공간구성에 있어서는 모두 중정을 가지는 내향적 구성을 갖는다는 공통점이 있지만, 그들의 집합방식과 그것에서 파생되는 주거지의 공간구조에 있어서는 각자나름의 뚜렷한 공간질서를 가지고 있음이 파악되었다. 또한 주택과 주거지가 물과관계하는 방식에 있어서도 여러가지 독자성이 파악되었다. 그러나 두 도시 모두에서는 수로를 단순히 기능적인 공간으로 사용하지 않고, 주거지의 정체성과 장소성을 달성하는 풍부한 환경장치로서 세심하고도 다양하게 활용한다는 공통적인 사실이 인식되었다. |

This study is a comparative investigation on the spatial structure of Suzhou, China and Italian Venezia. This is a morphological depiction based on field and literature surveys. The two cities are representative canal city of Asia and Europe, those of great swathes of water, but are also comparatively well-preserved medieval cities with a dense matrix of waterway. While Suzhou is a planned city having well-organized system of street and canal, Venezia is intensely crowded with overlaid networks and labyrinth of canals. Similarities and differences in the spatial structure of those cities are reviewed through comparison of following factors:
①system of waterways and streets ②system of building lots in residential area ③layout of canal, house, and commercial buildings ④formation of community space ⑤system of housing cluster ⑥entrance system into house and circulation of inside ⑦organization of internal space in house ⑧additive spaces around house. While spatial organization of private house of both cities is similar having internal courtyard, overall spatial structures of those cities are remarkably unique because of differences in housewater relationship. However, two cities have similarities in the way of using waterways not just as functional spaces but as places of various activities and multiple meanings. |
