In general, the history of the Korean houses in the pre-modern period has been explained without any reference to its transition after the introduction of the Western style houses in the late 19th century. The architectural historians give their attentions mainly to the traditional houses and the houses in early modern period at most, letting the modern houses left in the realm of housing studies. It is caused by the fact that the modern house in Korea is sharply distinctive, compared with the Korean traditional houses in terms of materials, structure and shape. In this paper, we try to find a way of explaining the transition of the Korean houses from those of the traditional period to those of the modern period as a continuous process, regardless of abrupt changes in their forms and function. For this, we theorize the conceptual framework of three archetypal spatial elements; Ondol, Maru and Bueok, which have been existing in the Korean houses over the whole period in their history and have given characteristic qualities to the Korean houses. |
